Meet Darryl + Ali, Illawarra locals welcoming offshore wind to "The Gong”.
An engineer and life-time coal worker, Darryl is excited about the jobs + opportunities offshore wind and green steel at Port Kembla will provide for local workers + industries.
In a region built on heavy industry, Darryl sees offshore wind as the Illawarra’s golden ticket to a clean, healthy, thriving community + economy.
Heavy industry (like the steel works) needs to be powered by heavy industry, like offshore wind.
By transforming to green steel powered by offshore renewables, Port Kembla steel works can continue providing jobs + supporting the local economy.
Having seen community devastation when coal mines shut, workers lose jobs + families break apart, Darryl says the offshore wind industry is essential to provide the jobs needed for the economic survival and prosperity of the Illawarra.
Next up, Ali, a local water woman + mum. Ali represents the large part of her community wanting offshore wind in Wollongong.
Ali wants her community to come together over the huge potential of offshore wind in the Illawarra, as a lifeline for their community's future.
“Let’s go big and see what we can get for our community out of this. Can we get free EV charging stations, money for our schools and free energy for the community? Is that possible?”
Anything is possible.
Aim for the stars Ali!
